Sitting Figure No 1
2008
To me these are the nearest things to actual life drawings. In these the fascination is with form and mark making, they are done quickly like sketches. They are very different to the slower more particular pace of work that is apparent in, for example, the Swimmer sculptures. With these clay sketches I try and work quickly; there seems a certain energy and a certain rightness to that, like drawing; the marks you make and the lines you don’t realize you are making; gestures in the clay suggest form, you go with that and then the piece becomes fluid.
